The VIENNA DESIGN WEEK is an annual and carefully curated festival of product and graphic design and manifests itself in the whole city of Vienna, founded by Tulga Beyerle, Thomas Geisler and Lilli Hollein in 2007.
The aim of the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK is to show and enable people to experience the many faceted work in the fields of product, furniture and industrial design as well as experimental and graphic design. In corporation with many partners - from Viennese museums to production and retail companies - the whole of Vienna becomes a platform and showplace of design. The festival doesn‘t have the character of a trade fair but instead offers a variety of venues and approaches specific to Vienna. The festival sets out to be „international but localised“, with an abiding interest to cooperate with the flourishing scenes in Central and Eastern Europe, and certainly beyond. It aims to reveal creative and production processes and encourage experimental work on the spot. It also presents and promotes design that in the first instance withdraws from the scheme of utility value and functionality in order to create awareness and pose questions or simply to have fun. The exploration of materials, mood values and interaction between people and objects lie at the centre of design practice and consequently are important points of reference within VIENNA DESIGN WEEK. With exhibitions, venue-specific installations, theme specials, talks and a number of curated formats VIENNA DESIGN WEEK is not only an attraction for the international design scene but most explicitly aims to interest and appeal to a wide audience of Viennese and visitors to Vienna.
Tulga Beyerle studied Industrial Design at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna. In the following years she was University Assistant in Vienna in the field of history and theory of design. Since 2001 a free lance curator and author, Tulga Beyerle was responsible for exhibitions like „2000 to 2010, Design in Vienna“ 2010, together with Peter Stuiber (plus publisher of the exhibition catalogue), Wien Museum; „Pace of Design“, 2009, Experimentadesign Lisbon and publications like in „New Vienna Now“, Vienna 2010 and „Design Cities, eight moments that changed the world“ London 2008; together with Karin Hirschberger editor of „A Century of Austrian Design“ Basel 2006. Together with Thomas Geisler and Lilli Hollein, she founded the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK in 2007, since 2011 directing the festival with Lilli Hollein.
